Animal Advocates Name Posey Volunteer of the Year for 2007

What is a volunteer? When the Board of Directors of Animal Advocates met to decide who should receive the honor for 2007's Volunteer of the Year, there were many volunteers to consider. One volunteer stood out, though. Gail Posey. From the time she was a child, helping her mother (Marianne Morris) caring for animals in their shelter in Olar, she has been the epitome of a volunteer for the cause of helping animals. She knows no county (or state) lines. She volunteers at MAMAS (in Bamberg, named after her mother), volunteers for Animal Advocates (in Barnwell), and fosters animals for Animal Advocates and the Barnwell County animal shelter. She made two trips to the 9th Ward of New Orleans to help rescue animals after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Why some do what they do ... I am an Animal Rescuer

My job is to assist God's creatures

I was bom with the drive to fulfill their needs

I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection

I have bought dog food with my last dime

I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand

I have hugged someone vicious and afraid

I have fallen in love a thousand times

And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count

I have animal friends and friends who have animal friends

I don't often use the word '·pet"

I notice those lost on the road

And my heart aches....
